It's important to understand how usable a voting system is for the entire voting population - especially those who could face physical challenges at the polls. For this usability study, I led two teams in evaluating the usability of six electronic voting systems for users with low vision, blind users, users with low upper extremity dexterity, and non-disabled users.

Skills: Project management, experimental design, survey methods, participant recruitment, client relations, user testing, data analysis and reporting

Roadway congestion and crashes result in significant economic and societal losses each year. Using virtual and extended reality (VR, XR), such as the InterchangeSE system, to simulate new traffic configurations to address these issues is promising. However, before such a system can be deployed, it must be evaluated with users and iterated upon. In this project, I evaluated the user experience of the InterchangeSE system in terms of usability, workload, cybersickness, performance, and immersion in the virtual world.

Skills: Experimental design, observation, survey methods, user testing, technical reporting, data analysis

Peer assessments are a common tool used to encourage accountability in higher education classrooms. However, not all students experience the peer assessment process the same way. In this project, I developed, tested with users, and iterated upon an interactive training to increase fairness in peer assessment.

Skills: Project management, experimental design, structured interviews, survey methods, focus groups, prototyping, card sorting, storyboarding, data synthesis and analysis

To ensure equitable participation in research, historically marginalized populations should be actively included. However, researchers have often struggles to foster these partnerships. To bridge the gap between researchers and marginalized communities, my team and I developed best practices through experience, literature review, and interviews with other researchers. These best practices (Earn Trust Through Partnership, Be Multilingual & Inclusive, Communicate for Understanding, Respect Work Schedules and Cultural Norms, and Offer Something Useful) were then applied to the design of a data collection exercise for the study of weatherization decision making and behaviors of urban residents in an economically disadvantaged community. The results of the process were positive with high levels of participation and engagement. The use of the best practices allowed the researchers to better engage with the population, to the benefit of both groups.

Skills: Relationship building, requirements gathering, gaining trust, participant recruitment, research material development
